Why are the primary allylic and primary benzyllic approximately equal in stability? It seems that the benzyllic would be more stable because the partial positive charge would be shared by 4 carbons in the benzyllic carbocation, and only two carbons in the allylic. Is this a molecular orbital theory thing?
